Today I switched over to a full KDE plasma interface and did a full system update. I discovered that Kate and KWrite appear to be fully functional and the "save" works. Despite the fact that more diligence on my part could have avoided my problem, I believe that there should be more checking by Kate and KWrite in the "save" process. With the help of the very helpful Claude.ai, 3 days were consumed trying to track down the problem using a variety of Linux tools such as traces and logs. But in any case, I greatly appreciate the work of the Linux staff and the quick support to look into the problem. This should close out my problem report. Thanks very much.
