            Bug ID: 526538
           Summary: wetter.com provider no longer works: API returns
                    "Project not found" / "Invalid access data"
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: plasmashell
      Version First master
       Reported In:
          Platform: CachyOS
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: Weather widget
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
                CC: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: 1.0

Plasma Weather widget showing the error message that the weather forecast could
not be loaded.

The widget shows:

"Could not load weather forecast. Possibly due to a temporary technical
problem with the weather information provider."

When opening the Weather Station configuration and searching for a location,
no results from wetter.com are returned.

I tested the wetter.com API endpoint used by Plasma directly. The server is
reachable and returns HTTP 200, but the XML response contains an API
authentication/project error.

For a location search the response is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<error>
  <title>Invalid access data</title>
  <message>Project not found.</message>
</error>

For a forecast request for an already configured location the response is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<error>
  <title>Invalid access data</title>
  <message>Either your username or the checksum are invalid.</message>
</error>

Plasma 6.7.5 still uses the wetter.com project name "weatherion" in
ion_wettercom.h.

The relevant endpoints in the Plasma 6.7.5 source are:

https://api.wetter.com/location/index/search/%1/project/weatherion/cs/%2
https://api.wetter.com/forecast/weather/city/%1/project/weatherion/cs/%2

This suggests that the wetter.com API project/account used by KDE is currently
no longer accepted by the wetter.com API.

The problem is reproducible with an already configured wetter.com location as
well as with new location searches.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

1. Add or open the Weather Report widget.
2. Configure a location using the wetter.com provider.
3. Open the widget.
4. The forecast fails to load.
5. Open Weather Station settings.
6. Search for a location such as "Leun", "Frankfurt" or "Berlin".
7. No wetter.com search results are returned.

OBSERVED RESULT

Weather forecast cannot be loaded and wetter.com location searches return no
results.

Direct requests to api.wetter.com return HTTP 200, but the response body
contains "Invalid access data", including "Project not found" for the location
search.

EXPECTED RESULT

The wetter.com provider should return matching locations and weather forecast
data.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Configured location:

Bissenberg (Leun), Hessen, DE

Stored place information:

place|Bissenberg (Leun), Hessen, DE|extra|DE0006242002;Leun

Provider:

wettercom

The packages appear to be intact:

plasma-workspace 6.7.5-1.1
kdeplasma-addons 6.7.5-1.1

"pacman -Qkk kdeplasma-addons" reports:

kdeplasma-addons: 2355 total files, 0 altered files

The API host itself is reachable, so this does not appear to be a DNS,
connectivity or TLS problem.

Possibly related to bug 521835:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=521835

That report was closed as WORKSFORME, but the problem is currently reproducible
again and the wetter.com API itself now explicitly reports that the KDE project
is invalid.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Operating System: CachyOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
plasma-workspace: 6.7.5-1.1
kdeplasma-addons: 6.7.5-1.1
Graphics Platform: Wayland
