            Bug ID: 527214
Summary: Effects overview laggy when upgrading to 6.8 when
                    switching windows/virtual desktops
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First 6.8.0
       Reported In:
          Platform: Arch Linux
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: effects-overview
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

DESCRIPTION

During certain circumstances, opening the overview via a shortcut (currently
triggered via mouse key) is slow (0.5s-1s, jittery). Under normal
circumstances, it is very smooth and quick (<0.25 seconds to open/close). Oh
6.7.5 this was always smooth.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

Unfortunately, this is very inconsistent. Sometimes, the issue goes away
without any noticeable user interaction, and other times user interaction that
I would expect to make it worse does not. That being said, here are some
triggers which seem to increase the likelihood of slower overview:

1. Opening the overview when the cursor is on a larger window (3440x1440, or
4k). Only very infrequently would I see this fail on a 1080p monitor.
2. Switching virtual desktops. If it was running quickly before and I switch
virtual desktops then it was more likely for the overview open/close to be
slower.
3. Moving cursor from one desktop to another.

Notably, this temporarily solves itself if I peek to desktop and back (shown in
attached video below), but after about the fourth time it slows down again.
Sometimes, the overview also just starts fast on its own if left alone for
sufficient time?

OBSERVED RESULT

Opening the overview shows visual lag/jitter, and is > 0.5 seconds.

Apologies for linking a file externally, the 4MB limit is not small:

EXPECTED RESULT

Opening (and closing) overview should be smooth and fast (< 0.25 seconds).

In the good case, per nvtop, I see the GPU utilization jump by around 20% (from
1% to 21%), whereas in the slower case I see it jumping by around 15%. CPU
utilization per htop appears about the same. In both cases, I see GPU
utilization jump by around 800 MiB, and then free that memory some 6-12 seconds
later after closing overview. Performance does not appear to be impacted by
whether or not the GPU memory for overview is already used.
