I tried to use the default debug environment variable to see if I would get any printouts, but no luck. Unfortunately this is a proprietary backend that is not easy to debug :( You could try to start Skanlite with the following command: SANE_DEBUG_SMFP=16 skanlite and see if you get any debug printout and post it here if you get any.
