I think it's a question of "levels of indirection", BTRFS adds an extra level,
could be that other filesystems do so as well.

I have a feeling this is going to be awkward. Looking at a system with two
BTRFS discs, 'vda1' and 'vdb1', they also appear with different minor device
numbers - the same as subvols on a single disc. Hmmm....
