The second run died at about 57%, so I changed the environment variable to activate debug; started dbugview; then restarted digikam. Of course this time it ran perfectly and finished importing new items. It's an annoying fault, which also occurs on my even older Lubuntu desktop. I will henceforth always run dbugview, with digikam, even though it slows everything down. At least if it happens again I can give you a debug log.
