IMHO it consumes too much vertical screen space to be of any practical use, especially with todays' 16:9 displays. Pictures get significantly reduced in height and therefore width if it's active. When I'm reviewing images, I tend to use fullscreen mode and have my images maximized to see as much detail as possible.
