+1 for Matrix - given that it's bridged to Freenode, all you have to do is give out Matrix links instead of linking people to IRC and they'll be able to participate in the same community.
You might want to look into creating Matrix rooms manually if you want more control over the room (the ability to add integrations, etc), but even without that it's fine. (And it's an open protocol!)
