Well, most distributions cache screenshots on their own and serve them from their infrastructure (Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu and OpenSUSE do that), while only a few use the upstream-provided URLs directly (I am only aware of Arch right now). Caching stuff allows distros to provide resized thumbnails for smaller downloads and also allows blocking certain screenshots from showing up in the software-center retroactively (e.g. in case someone added non-free copyrighted material there, and we realize that only later). This is just FYI, I still think a Git-Annex $whatever based repository of screenshots is better than hotlinking them into Phabricator or Quickgit.
