I suggest you to contribute KTechLab which is a opensource GPL V3
circuit analysis and pic simulator. (
https://github.com/ktechlab/ktechlab/wiki )  It looks like it got its
lastest commit 10 months ago.
Currently it is on Qt4 porting process but it will be nice to have someone
port it to Qt5.  For my opinion it will be much better to contribute a
project instead of starting a project from scratch.
Even if you want to start from scratch it will be much better to follow an
already developed one.
