creating a new BE and installing stuff in there is really easy, and - ha! - 
  non-destructive as far as your "original" BE is concerned.

$ pfexec beadm create <newBE>
$ pfexec beadm mount <newBE> /mnt
$ pfexec pkg -R /mnt install SUNWcmake.
$ pfexec beadm umount <newBE> # ! this is important!
$ pfexec beadm activate <newBE>
$ pfexec init 6

or something like that.
