You are right that it's a very outdated GNUTLS. There is no hard requrement 
for it, it's just that *that* is the GNUTLS version we have traditionally 
used. I myself would much prefer to rely on SUNWgnutls if that is feasible. 
It's peculiar that it lives in the GNOME2 category, but I suppose that 
reflects more on the "who is maintaining it" than "what is it for".
