I've built 3.5.7 on x86 with gcc 4.2.x.  It only needed some minor
patches.  I used konstruct.

there was an email about this ca two months ago. Someone (Michael
Lindig?) 
build 3.5.7 on Sparc and published the binaries, the sources and a
README 
... I don't know whether anybody's successfully repeated this or done it
on 
x86.
Maybe I can dig up those messages if you can't find them in the
archives.
