The actual error should be somewhere on your console where you ran startx - posting the output you got there here will help us spot the error. If you find it hard to gather the backlog from the system console, try redirecting the output of startx to a file. My shot-in-the-dark guess is that the packages are mismatched - FreeBSD 5.3 shipped with Xorg 6.7.0 and KDE 3.3.0, so I'm assuming that you're using the latest Xorg packages for 5-STABLE, but the KDE packages from 5.3-Release - which probably doesn't work, since those KDE packages were built with and for Xorg 6.7.0.
