Hi!

Big problem here: KDE does not start. I know, that's not very
specific, so here the gory details.

uname -a:
FreeBSD arbeitsplatz2.funkhaus.radio98eins.de 6.0-RELEASE FreeBSD
6.0-RELEASE #0: Fri Nov 18 16:57:54 CET 2005
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SCHWARZE_RECHNER
 i386

KDE compiled from source, portstree as it was on the RELEASE media.
The following packages are installed:

de-kde-i18n =
kdebase =
kdebase-kompmgr =
kdegraphics =
kdehier =
kdelibs =
kdenetwork =
kdepim =
kdeutils =

I did a fresh install, no upgrade from the previous version of
FreeBSD/KDE (which was 5.4-RELEASE, KDE as it came on the
installation media). /home is mounted via NFS, statd and lockd
endabled both on the server and on the clients.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade and continued to do so
after the reinstall with the new version of the OS and KDE, but
yesterday I got a phone call from my "employer" (a not-for-profit
radio station) that some users can't login anymore. Today, when I
arrived at the station building, _none_ was able to login via KDE,
including myself. I switched to Fluxbox, but I cannot make all the
other users do that (almost all Windoze "professionals").

KDM loads as usual, but when someone tries to login, either
a) the KDE splash shows up, when it reaches the third logo it (i.e.
the logo) keeps blinking for a while, then the splash disappears,
the background from the KDM stays there, Ctrl-Alt-Backscape required
b) nothing happens, i.e. the KDM login window disappears and that's
it; Ctrl-Alt-Backscape required

Because of a) I remebered an old bug, described in
/usr/ports/UPDATING, concerning a permission problem in /tmp. I
checked that - everything as it should be, so that's not the problem.
Next try: rm -R /tmp/*-<username> /var/tmp/*-<username>
/home/<username>/.kde/socket|cache|tmp, but to no avail.
Next: the extreme. rm -R as above, but including .kde and .kderc
.DCOP* in the user home directory. Still no luck.
Next, I tried to start KDE applications (konqueror, kmail) from
within twm/fluxbox, but this doesn't work either with no error
message on xterm whatsoever.

So, as I'm not the most savvy KDE guru alive (quite the contrary),
'KDE broken freebsd' is not the best thing to Google for and I could
not find anything helpful in the kde-freebsd archives, does anyone
have any idea what could be the problem here? KDE? FreeBSD (NFS)?
KDE on FreeBSD? My stupidity?

If you need more data (logs, settings etc.) please do ask any time.

I pray you don't tell me to upgrade to the latest version, because I
do not dare the gnome-upgrade script...

Thanks in advance
Andreas
