I found that Qt 4.0.x's qmake would ignore QMAKE_UIC, but if you say it's working now I'll reinvestigate.
I am coding all my GUIs by hand, so I haven't actually tried uic. I just set QMAKE_UIC, but since there is not a single .ui file in my project, qmake was smart enough not to include any references to uic in the resulting makefile. So it still remains unknown whether this has been fixed. Sorry if I rushed to a conclusion without checking out all the details.
