For the correct way to start KDE, see section 5.7.2.2 of the FreeBSD handbook at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x11-wm.html You might also like to try using kdm for graphical logins - it's described on that page of the handbook.
