I'm trying to run Skype on my FreeBSD 6.1 system, and I am having
conflicts with KDE and the arts sound system. It works fine after I
kill artsd, but that's not a good solution. I have hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=4
in my /etc/sysctl.conf file, but I still can't get Skype to play nice
with artsd. It doesn't matter if I set KDE/artsd to use /dev/dsp0.0
or /dev/dsp0.1, Skype still complains that there's a problem with the
sound device. There is no way in Skype configuration to get it to use
another device besides /dev/dsp. I tried to use artsdsp, but it spits
out a lot of errors.

I can install a second sound card, but why should I? Has anyone figured
out the magic words to get Skype to behave?

Thanks,
