We recently updated to Boost 1.89 on OpenWRT and as a consequence, Kea no
longer builds because -lboost_system as gone away (something about it being
headers only).
Does anyone have workarounds to getting this building in that environment? Is
there a meson flag that deals with this compatibility?

Fixed with https://gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/kea/-/issues/4085. It
made it into 3.1.2. We plan to backport the fix to 3.0.2, but there is
no expected release date as of yet.

The new code which works with all boost versions >= 1.66 in meson.build is:
boost_dep = dependency('boost', version: '>=1.69', required: false)
if not boost_dep.found()
boost_dep = dependency('boost', version: '>=1.66', modules: ['system'])
endif
