Just discovered that the -73 kernel, due to being unable to load modules
on Xenial, uses PS/2 rather than RMI4 to drive the touchpad which works
around the bug in any case. Anyway, my problem is similar enough to
leave this as a duplicate. In case -73 when released for Xenial does not
fix the problem, I'll report here.

Title:
Touchpad & trackpoint on Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen broken as of
  4.15.0-72-generic

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When upgrading from kernel 4.15.0-70-generic to 4.15.0-72-generic, the
touchpad and track point on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Gen stops
working. There are no errors in the logs, the mouse cursor just does
not move at all & clicks are not registered.

From dmesg the touchpad is identified as:
psmouse serio1: synaptics: Touchpad model: 1, fw: 8.2, id: 0x1e2b1, caps:
0xf002a3/0x940300/0x12e800/0x400000, board id: 3289, fw id: 2492434
rmi4_f01 rmi4-00.fn01: found RMI device, manufacturer: Synaptics, product:
TM3289-002, fw id: 2492434

  The trackpoint:
psmouse serio2: trackpoint: Elan TrackPoint firmware: 0x04, buttons: 3/3

Found on Linux Mint 18.2 - which uses the Ubuntu 16.04 repo for this
  package.
