Hello,

I just did up upgrade of Fedora 43 and I got
the following firmware packages

amd-gpu-firmware
tiwilink-firmware
realtek-firmware
qcom-wwan-firmware
nvidia-gpu-firmware
linux-firmware
iwlwifi-mvm-firmware
libertas-firmware
mt7xxx-firmware
atheros-firmware
iwlwifi-mld-firmware
brcmfmac-firmware
cirrus-audio-firmware
intel-audio-firmware
iwlegacy-firmware
intel-gpu-firmware

The machine is a Intel NUC (12 core Intel(R) Core(TM)
i7-10710U CPU @ 1.10GHz)

So do I really need firmware for amd-gpu or brcmfmac or iwlegacy
etc...

The bottom line... Do I really need all these firmware packages?

No, you don't, they are generally pulled in with installers to ensure
HW works, but they're soft deps and depending on you HW most can be
removed.

The fact they are pulled in as part of an upgrade is interesting, they
were split out into sub-packages a long time ago and I don't believe
should have been pulled in on upgrade although the "upgrade of Fedora
43" is quite generic, were you upgrading to F-43 from an older
release, or just F-43 stable updates?
No... my apologies I miss-spoke it was a dnf update [1]
not and upgrade...

The strange thing is when I did the same update [1] on my Lenovo laptop
the those packages were not installed...

Thanks for the info!

steved.

[1] dnf update -y --refresh --no-best --allowerasing --no-gpgchecks
