Bernd, I use an out of the box Ubuntu 9.10 and I have it installed automatically. As you note, the ps2pdf is a part of the ghostscript package.
Both SuSE and Ubuntu have the package as well as my Asus laptop and eeePC laptop. I would say it's unusual to NOT have this available unless you run a really exotic distro...
