Core 2 is the next core generation from Core family which means from Core 1.
Core 2 can be of the following: Core 2 Solo = 1 core Core 2 Duo = 2 cores Core 2 Quad = 4 cores Dual Core on the other hand means 2 cores in any core family. it is a generic term use for 2 core, it might be with athlons or intels.
