CubaNews summary - Sept. 13, 2001
=====================================
Here are some of the sources of information on how
Cuba has responded to the crisis and how the crisis
is affecting Cuba as well. Cuba's response has been
strong, clear and unambiguous. NOTE: At times like
these, Cuban websites sometimes don't open up.
In time, they do however. Here are a few.

FRONT PAGE OF GRANMA WEBSITE

"Together with the U.S. people we feel pain and
sadness," said Cuba's President Fidel Castro. TEXT:

Statement from Government of the Republic of Cuba
http://www.granma.cu/ingles/septiem2/37decl-i.html

Cuba rejects terrorism and offers condolences as
well as practical assistance to the U.S. people.

REUTERS LIE: CUBA IGNORES WTC TRAGEDY
In a vicious and unsigned article, Reuters claims that
the Cuban media are not covering the story. This is a
grotesque fabrication. Anyone with a computer can
look at Cuban TV via the internet from the Granma
website. It was the main story on Cuban TV last night.

COLUMNISTS READY THE PUBLIC FOR WAR
America's columnists, some of them at least, are ready to
go to war. From the safety of their word processors, they
are urging the Bush administration to bomb someone --
anyone -- who can be tied to Tuesday's devastating
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Tapping into the nation's revulsion, some armchair warriors
have opened rhetorical fire. The New York Post's
Steve Dunleavy: "The response to this unimaginable
21st-century Pearl Harbor should be as simple as it is
swift -- kill the bastards. . . . A gunshot between the eyes,
blow them to smithereens, poison them if you have to. . . .
As for cities or countries that host these worms, bomb
them into basketball courts.

MIAMI HERALD POINTS TO POSSIBLE SUSPECTS
"Islamic-sounding" names are targetted.

MUSLIMS IN U.S. UNDER ATTACK
After the Oklahoma City bombing, followers of the Islamic
faith were quickly targetted by the media seeking someone
to blame for the attack. Of course it was later revealed that
the perpetrators were not Muslims at all, but right-wingers
from the heartland of the U.S. such as Timothy McVeigh.

Though we have no idea who is responsible for the attacks
on the WTC and Pentagon, a familiar pattern of fingerpointing
has begun. Here are a few reports from the Miami Herald:

FBI LAUNCHES MASSIVE INVESTIGATION
    from the Miami Herald:
Independent security experts said some of the first
leads looked promising: Two bags with the Koran,
a video with flying instructions and a plane fuel
consumption table were found at Boston's airport.
Airline passenger lists with the names of suspected
Islamic extremists living in the United States led to
search warrants for homes, hotels and cars in
Florida and Massachusetts.

The Army's National Security Agency began playing
back tapes of pre- and post-attack phone calls from
suspects in the United States to possible terrorist
sponsors in Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere.

PROBE IDENTIFIES 50 IN TERRORISM PLOT
    from the Sun-Sentinel:
Ten suspects remain at large and FBI agents are out
looking for remaining suspects widely. Consider this:

In Boston, federal agents, bomb specialists, firefighters
and police officers staged a dramatic midday raid on
the Westin Copley Place hotel. Wearing black hoods
and heavy bulletproof vests, agents carried battering
rams, AR-15 firearms and fiber-optic equipment,
which can check under doors. They took into custody
three people, who were later released.

MIAMI STUDENTS LAUNCH PEACE VIGIL
The bombing that destroyed the twin towers of the
World Trade Center in New York City, and a portion
of the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., brought
together people who under normal circumstances
would never have met, senior Michael Kilpatrick said.
"This has renewed my faith in the kindness of people,''
Kilpatrick said.

JEB BUSH WORRIES ABOUT TOURISM
While Disney World reopened in Florida, the state's
governor, Jeb Bush, worried about the impact of 9-11
on the state's tourism business: In Tallahassee, the
governor attended Mass early Wednesday, then joined
legislative leaders in donating blood at a Red Cross
bus parked outside the Capitol. But the talk in the state
Capitol focused not on blood banks or security, but on
the impact this week's attacks might have on an already
financially strapped state government.

LATIN GRAMMYS, FILMS, TO BE RE-SCHEDULED
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Officials of the National Academy
of Recording Arts & Sciences, the group that oversees
the Latin Grammys, are scheduled to convene in
Santa Monica this morning to decide how to distribute
its trophies amid reports that the awards show will not
be rescheduled.

The awards show was originally scheduled for Miami's
AmericanAirlines Arena but was moved three weeks
ago over fear that anti-Castro protesters would disrupt
the event. "People are going to get their awards, but
we have not determined how,'' said Ron Roecker,
another Grammy spokesman.

Also, The Rats, an original Fox movie about 78 million
killer rodents taking over New York City, will be bumped
at 8 p.m. Monday and replaced by Eddie Murphy's
The Nutty Professor.
