AFP. 10 January 2002. FARC still wants to negotiate: UN.

BOGOTA -- The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) still wants
to negotiate with the government, despite a breakdown in peace talks,
the UN special envoy to Colombia said Thursday.

James Lemoyne, who told reporters here he had been in contact with the
rebel group, said: "I know FARC wants to negotiate," but added the UN
would not assume the role of mediator in the crisis.

"There is still time" to find a solution to the collapsed peace process,
Lemoyne said, calling on all parties involved to avoid any provocative
military action or statements.

In New York, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appealed to the government
and leftist rebels to save the three-year-old peace process, and return
to negotiations.
