Mantsurov, like other councillors opposing the right-wing policies of the local authorities, had been subjected to harassment before. After protesting against the constant switching off of electric power in his town, he was seriously beaten by men who held two pistols to his temple. Astrakhan has in recent years been the scene of fierce battles between workers and employers supported by the corrupt mayor and ruling political establishment in the area, including the KPRF. The bravery and self-organization of the Gazprom workers, to give one example, has been inspirational to us all. But violent attacks against those who fight for the rights of working people must never be tolerated. We urge you and your union or other colleagues to write in now and express your outrage at this event.
