There's a large gap between "comfortable" and "died off" -- the genes
don't care if your life is crap if you have lots of kids to survive you.

You'll age fast and die young, so have lots of kids to take care of you
in your dotage.

Humans can survive quite a lot of unpleasantness, and still manage to
enjoy life a little bit and kick out a lot of children. Doesn't mean
that life has to be _pleasant_ compared to what it could be.
