Indeed, it's a wonder that the populations of these backwaters haven't died off centuries ago and the land gone back to jungle.

There's a large gap between "comfortable" and "died off" -- the genes
don't care if your life is crap if you have lots of kids to survive you.

"Comfortable" and "Life is crap" are value judgments best left to the individual. Of course, that kind of thinking goes against recent and current U.S. foreign policy.

And Wal*Mart's benevolent marketing policy.

Apparently, they just don't know how dangerous life is without some kind of officious hand holding.

You'll age fast and die young, so have lots of kids to take care of you
in your dotage.

In the context of life, longevity does not imply a higher quality of life. In any case, take care of yourself throughout your life and you'll stand a better chance of avoiding dotage. Then hope you live in a culture that allows you to die with dignity. On the way, teach your kids to take care of themselves.

Humans can survive quite a lot of unpleasantness, and still manage to
enjoy life a little bit and kick out a lot of children. Doesn't mean
that life has to be _pleasant_ compared to what it could be.

Which in itself can make you stronger. Spend a week with my "crippled" wife and me and a few of our "crippled" friends and then you might want to rethink that thought. [Here's a hint: my wife has never wished she didn't have Cerebral Palsy.]
