Considering that at least only a couple of years ago, virtually all map software publishers' source of U.S. maps was the U.S. Government (as in Bureau of the Census and USGS) I guess I'm out of date as to why it's now hard to get map data.
It's not hard, it's expensive. Last time I looked, I think it cost $180k to get the USA, and similar cost for Canada from the Canadian govt. Every time someone from the govt proposes to make the data free to the public, the "Garmin"'s of the country/world convince them otherwise to protect their investment.
