I'm convinced that most lawyers (and judges come from the lawyer pool) start out in their training with at least a little part of them being star-struck by the love of Justice. Very few (we'll call them the "Tom Hagens") start out to use the law to rip people off.
Judges, by and large, really do want to believe that the law provides justice. We often forget this.
And, if you have ever spent some time watching a court work, this is actually, by and large, true.
The problem is that the only contact that the law-abiding tend to have with the justice system is normally rare and normally irritating.
The system is set up to process those who break the law rather than coddle those who normally abide it.
