I never understood this argument- how is state power better than federal power? If either government has a power, its potential for abuse. I can understand saying no government should have power X, but saying its better at the state level than the federal because states are magically better is sheer sophistry.

Because it's often easier to vote the rascals out on a state level than a national level.

Sometimes. Its also easier to influence local elections negatively on a state level as well.

Because having someone 2000 miles away decide what is best for my state is an undesirable state of affairs.

So why stop at states? Why not abolish states and do everything by city? Again, nothing magical about states. And sometimes having outside opinions is beneficial. Think we ever would have gotten rid of Jim Crow laws on a state by state basis?

Because local control and local accountability works better for most governmental functions.

For some yes. Others work better with economy of scale. Yet others work best if things are national standards- imagine if Oregon decided green meant stop and red was go on a sotp light.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
