I agree. When rush hour hits, I tend to open up a solid gap by simply being steady.

Lots of people jump in front of me, accelerate to the car ahead, and slam on their brakes. They also tend to jump back *out* of my lane just as quickly.

The big problem with keeping a gap in front is often the guy *behind* me. Some people ... just ... can't ... stand ... it ... and will park on your bumper to attempt to make you close.
