Asterisk does not do forward error correction. SIP in general does not do forward error correction. If you drop even one packet you get a drop in your data. Horribly late and out of order packets (greater than whatever the jitter buffer can handle) are indeed blown off but the result is the same as a dropped packet.
If you're actually using asterisk, it would be interesting to see what the dropped packet statistics are against a real colo box.
I just ran wireshark on my EC2 box hosting my asterisk server during a phone call. No dropped packets.
