Powered up, plugged in via ethernet to the computer, sometimes plugged
in to the cable modem, sometimes not.

Yes. Lots of blinking of the PC light if the modem is connected to the
router.

No. That's what I mean with "completely unresponsive". Even if
disconnected from the cable modem, and connected to the PC via wire, the
router does not let me in.

I get access and reasonable status parameters only after complete reboot
from Windows and CD (probably, reloading of the firmware). 

So I'm wondering whether the router can be hacked (i.e., the firmware
replaced by an attack over the internet).
