That's the hyperlinks ("hlinks"), right?
If you hand-merged (e.g., cut-and-paste) a change from one branch to
another, you could record that without actually having to use the tool
to perform a merge. I never used it, but I think it would be useful.
I wrote a large wrapper library a few years ago that used these
hyperlinks extensively, both to record "manual" merges and attach other
metadata to revisions.
I've never seen another VCS that supports anything like ClearCase
hyperlinks. The idea would need more visibility before others will copy
it.
Go talk to the mercurial guys. They're really quite receptive to this
kind of thing.
Put a note on the mercurial mailing list. Even if they don't like the
suggestion, they'll try to suggest a substitute. If they can't suggest
a substitute, they're likely to listen to the suggestion really hard.
