Amazon S3 is all about assigning URI's to storage. :) But not physical storage. They have at least couple layers of abstraction above the physical storage.
..which makes one wonder: if storage becomes more cloudlike can we then focus more on /what/ rather than /where/? Semantic storage?
This is what S3 is about. I don't know where they store my data. I don't know on what drive, in what machine, or even on what continent. I just know the URI to my data and access it via a REST API.
