Well, first there were USB type A and type B connectors

cables are available with

  A male
  A female
  B male
 (B female may be rare or nonexistent in cables;
maybe? only found as hardware chassis receptacles)

Then "mini USB" appeared, which I believe have 5 connectors
 Mini male
Mini female (probably rare in cables)

Now, I also see mini USB divided into mini type A and mini type B, but I
can't see, don't understand the difference (if any)

Then there seem to be a somewhat less standard "micro USB" that, I think
were popularized by digital camera manufacturers. I might be wrong, but
I wouldn't bet on interchangeability <sigh>.

I have a cheap Vivitar camera that uses a D-shaped micro USB connector.
It seems to have 8 pins. I suppose the excess pins are all ground,
because USB only uses 4 of them, eh?

Here's one possibly helpful reference with pictures and pinouts:
  http://hytel.com.au/Reference/USB.htm
or maybe note the caption and expand the picture at
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Universal_Serial_Bus#Types_of_USB_connectors

==> If someone has a better reference, please post a link.

I will bring these cables to the September ifests (9/8 and 9/15):
 A/Male-to-A/Female
 A/Male-to-B/Male
 A/Male-to-Vivitar/Male (d-shaped 8-pin "micro")

Regards,
..jim
