I too will be needing a printer/scanner in the near future and have been
pondering the same things. I do like the idea of laserjet over inkjet
for the reasons you mention. But I also need a scanner. Preferably
networkable with a sheet feeder and ability to email the files so that
no special drivers or cables are needed. I am so sick of dealing with
fax when pretty much all of the people I deal with these days can do
email also. There are several interesting models out there for a few
hundred dollars.
I used to use the free version of
http://www.myfax.com (there are a lot of other
such services) which started charging when all
of the services started charging in about
2002-3. Even at a cost (@9.95/mo) I would
recommend taking a look. The service gives you a
"Fax Number" for customers that want to send you
a fax and it ends up in your e-mail. I would
then use Ghostscript/Ghostview to view the fax I
received and I would do a save as and modify
(text tool in any graphic app like the GIMP)
what was sent to me and send it back
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as an
attachment which the fax service system faxed
the regular way to the recipient. They didn't
have a clue that I did not have a fax machine
(just like they had no clue that OpenOffice was
the way I modified their .doc and .xls files and
sent them back to be opened w/ M$Office(x) ;^).
If you think about it, and if you absolutely
have to use fax as a way to communicate, you
were going to (probably) have to process the fax
they send you and return it OR you'll have to
create the doc you need to send via fax OR you
are going to have to scan the document you
received via mail (people who do fax do
snail-mail ALL the time) after you
fill-in/modify it anyway. Another thing to note
is that there are no long distance charges for
this type of service which may apply if you get
a multifunction unit that does fax.
Don't get me wrong, I too like those
multifunction units that can do networking built
in (IP-to-usb capable switches work fine too).
But I almost never used my printer with the
setup of my scanner and the fax-via-e-mail. In
fact I used my printer to print mapquest maps
when I needed to carry directions more than
anything else.
HTH!
