I don't know why I never asked this before, but what happens if I plug
two PCs together with a standard USB male-to-male cable?

I imagine it would function somewhat like connecting two computers together via FireWire, which can run an ad-hoc network with TCP/IP.

And, what conceivably might PC-USB-PC be used for with appropriate
software added?

- NFS over USB?
- more ways to share storage?
- terminal emulation?

Whadda ya know, GIYF: http://www.usbgear.net/item_167.html

Looks like USB can create an ad-hoc network of its own. I have no idea what software is necessary, but it appears to be possible. Since that specs page says it "[supports] TCP/IP, NetBEUI, [and] IPX/SPX protocols," you could likely run NFS, SSH, etc., over the cable.
