Correct.  To add more-  USB is a master-slave protocol.  With 2 PCs, both would 
think they were the master.  You'd need an adaptor with special 
drivers/firmware at the very least.

Other than that, if you did go ahead and do it-  the USB protocol expects 
device ids and stuff like that.  You could hack and do things like NFS or 
terminals with a bit of work- its all just data.  But it would be voodoo to set 
up, it isn't natively supported.
