I agree. For most people this is a big up ... but we are back to
the security/privacy question since I suspect it is _not_ encrypted
locally before transmission to S3.

For most people unencrypted backups to S3 are better than no backups at all. If you are backing up payroll data, SSN's, state secrets, etc. then this is clearly not the case. Also note that your communications with S3 *are* encrypted. You get a key when you sign up. What I am not sure of is whether the data is encrypted while it is stored on their servers or not. I suspect not.
