I bought a machine from Chips and Memory, without Windows. Motherboard ASUS M2N-E SLI CPU AMD 4600+ 1 Gb RAM 80 Gb HD extra fan; extra 10/100 NIC $555 including tax Ubuntu 7.10 Alternate Desktop version installed without much trouble. (Thanks, Carl.) The system runs especially quietly. I'm currently trying to rebuild my most awkward applications. (See the lpsg list.)
