You can't beat the physics of the situation, namely, you need a larger
aperture to capture the signals.

It is rumored that some laptops have an external antenna connector, I
have never seen one.
There are Cardbus wireless NICs that have a connector for an external antenna.
There are also USB NICs that have a larger antenna built in.  Examples
of these two types can be found at, among other places, Hawking
