Most people running an open AP are not aware they are doing so.

I'd just like to point out that when I set up my mom's upgraded DSL modem when she moved to her new home, the system _required_ I set up WEP. As in, I had no option, if I wanted to use the wireless service of the DSL modem/router, it was WEP or nothing.

This was a 2wire model (used with AT&T DSL in Chicagoland). I assume they only use WEP because of it being the lowest-common-denominator way of minimally restricting access to the network. For home use, though, I think WEP is good enough if you don't want to freely share your connection.

So at least one subset of home internet users are forced into using some form of access restriction on their wireless networks.
