Knoppix has a nice option called "tohd" and it will install the CD filesystem 
image to the harddisk( Windows or Linux ) and then boot from that. This will
leave you CDROM free for use so you can burn CDs/DVDs whatever.

FYI, the first time you run Knoppix and tell it "tohd", it will install and
boot 
that way, subsequent boots from the Knoppix LiveCD would require you
use the "fromhd" option.

When you get the the Knoppix bootprompt, enter "knoppix tohd=/dev/hda1"
or whatever partition you want the "/KNOPPIX" directory created.
