The issue is simply precedent/antecedent referral order. You generally
want to provide some context for your reply *before* the reply. Quote
first, then refute. This is standard for written communication of any
form, not just email.
Placing the quote at the bottom breaks that. In addition, in my
experience, the best replies tend to thread the responses with
individual sentences or points of the original post for maximum specificity.
To top it off, the "top reply and quote entire message chain" is a
Microsoft Exchangeism. Probably it's more a "Bureaucratic Ass
Coveringism", but it's generally considered an act of hostility on the
more technical mailing lists.
Finally, it's gotten to the point that if you make me take too much time
reading through your formatting no matter what it is, I just delete the
message unread.
Given that the people most likely to help you are also the people most
likely to unceremoniously delete your message due to
formatting/top-posting, you need to be aware of it. You can still
choose to continue to post however you please, but they can decide to
delete your message with prejudice.
