Funny you should mention that. Install Ubuntu 8.04 as a guest in VMware (I'm using Fusion right now). The new kernels break enough that the VMware guest kernel modules won't even compile.

Have a look at the 'open-vm-tools' package.  It's a GPL version of the
vmware tools.  They build with recent kernels, and seem to get updated,
unlike the ones distributed with Fusion.
