Quoting Andrew Lentvorski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
That fact that the Linux development community is now happy to assume things like "All the Linux are RedHat" simply demonstrates that programmer crappiness is not confined to Windows.
I've actually had reps from some of the big EDA vendors we work with make references like "suse linux" vs "regular linux." Guess what they considered "regular?"
Annoys the crap out of me. In the same thread, they were claiming they had compiled in some feature in the sw in question in the sparc/solaris and "regular" linux build, but not in the suse one.. for some dumbass reason.
Don't get me started on their incredibly stupid ass code that can be broken by future kernel changes to values in /proc/meminfo, doing things like causing variable overflow that makes a program malloc() anywhere from 400meg to 980gig! at startup. This was due to a feature they deliberately did to attempt to malloc all the ram the app thought it might need at startup... because "it's faster that way." Well duh.. if you don't ever have to deal with memory allocation while you go, then yeah, you might get a small boost.. but think what would happen if everyone did that. Firefox: Malloc a gig or so at startup.. just in case. They actually claimed that the speedup was because it "helped to guarantee the memory would be contiguous, thus making it faster," which made me want to beat the snot out of the morons that clearly have never learned anything about out memory management in modern unix(like) OSes work.
