OK, I believe that I was sent in the wrong direction by your initial

No, I want to copy files from the CD. I have no problem with the
installation reading files, but I want to specifically copy a given file
on the CD to some destination on the filesystem of the newly-installed
OS.

I still don't have a real answer, but I would believe that you must
issue your own mount command in the post-install script. And the CD
you read from can't be the one that your are installing from. (if you
are doing that).

??? You're suggesting that the source CD must be removed and replaced
with another one? Why?

I'm trying to automate a customized install. That's the whole point of
kickstart... I don't want to have to touch it :-)

Is there any reason you don't create a custom package (RPM) with the files you need and have it installed by kickstart? Later on you can remove the package and reinstall the files or just leave the package alone and copy over the files.
