I recently had a less-than-totally-satisfying vnc experience connecting
from my desktop to my bro-inlaw's <gasp> Windows Vista machine over a
relatively slow 1.5 Mbps dsl (which is all that was available to him).

client: vncviewer (vnc-4.1.2-20.fc7) via cable dn/up=5Mbps/360Kbps
server: tightvnc (latest) for windows approx dn/up=1.5Mbps/896Kbps

- My cable data is from speakeasy tests. I suspect my actual upload rate
might be higher, because I've seen torrent traffic at ~45-50 KBps
- The dsl speed data is from modem diagnostics page, and is consistent
with the contract. I suspect actual upload rate may be slightly lower
measured at the application level.

The vnc worked but my client display was sluggish and left
"mouse-droppings" all over. Sometimes the display just didn't seem to
update at all. It worked better if I let him drive than if I clicked and
typed. Al least he didn't have to read the screen to me over the phone!

I'm thinking his upload speed was the bottleneck. The dsl modem was
simply port-forwarding (a secret port ;-) ) to 5900 on his computer --
no tunneling or encryption or anything fancy. I used all defaults on the
server, and I don't remember setting any config parms for my vncviewer.

So, I'm looking for other people's experiences, and hopefully some
advice/recommendations to improve the speed and/or display-update
problems. Constrained to free - lowcost, please.

Regards,
..jim
